A Love Affair with Golf

I have often pondered over the years why I keep playing the infernal game of golf. After all, there are moments on the golf course when you see you ball disobey you yet again and you wonder why do I keep doing this. Why do I just say ‘hmm, interesting’ and carry on. The real reason is that I am in love with it and I guess in my naive way, golf has taught me as much about love and life as anything else I have experienced.

It takes time. I first started in my teens. I learnt from the golf books hanging around the family home. Greg Norman’s shark attack and another by Hale Irwin (yes, it is a while ago) were the main ones and later they were joined by Jack Nicklaus, later Tiger. I took the couple of ancient irons that were hanging around the house and went out into the back garden with aerated balls and began to hit up and down. My mum always protested about the divots I used to make as she used to take great pride in that garden. I saw it as a mini golf hole and then sometimes a cricket pitch, sometimes a football pitch. I will never forget that time. I somehow forged a love of being able to hit this little object up and down. Watching it fly, landing in the areas I was aiming at, getting it over things, under things. I just loved it. Could not tell you exactly why. There is often unconditionality in love.

You learn about yourself. Playing a round of golf is akin to having you personality dissected by a skilled psychologist. You can see the many shades of your own character and those you play with. It is easy to be optimistic on the first tee. How about the 2nd tee when you have just had a 10 on the first hole.? This game examines you and those around you. Plus, there is only you. You can’t really blame anyone else.

You make deep friendships. I look back and realise that some of my greatest friendships have been forged on the golf course. The 3 or 4 hours you spend on the course is equivalent to meeting up for coffee for 6 months. You share an adventure with someone. It is not quite Indianna Jones but nevertheless there are guaranteed to be some ups and downs and there is nothing like shared experience to bond people together.

You can experience quiet. Golf courses are an oasis in this modern age when everything around us seems to ping, buzz or ring. You really must turn off these things when playing and be in the moment. Golf on one level is very simple. There is you, the ball and the hole. Just get the ball in the hole. That is all you need to think about and immersing yourself in this activity is something like meditation.

You see beautiful things. We can see beauty all around us but you get to see a multifaceted beauty on the golf course — the surroundings, the animals that pop out in front of you, the sunrises, the sunsets, the look on someone’s face when they hit it perfect, the water holes, someone who has overcome adversity. There is a deep store of beauty on the golf course and those that play it.
