Why Social Entrepreneurship?

One of the most eective ways to eect positive change in society is through business. Many entrepreneurs attempt to create products and services that align with their values, while also providing profits. Social entrepreneurship is an approach where businesses act as social change agents who combine profit-making businesses with nonprofit ones, governments, educational institutions, and private groups.

Social entrepreneurs leverage market forces and business structures to deliver social benefits. They seek to create sustainable social impact as a central element of their mission and as the primary driver for their business’s success. Also, social entrepreneurs are involved in community development outside their businesses.

Social entrepreneurs are individuals who have expert knowledge about the importance of social change. The characteristics of a social entrepreneur include having the ability to analyze the problems aecting society and identify solutions; creativity, imagination, and innovation; moral courage; entrepreneurial drive; discipline; and passion for social activism.

Their vision is often aligned with the philosophy of an organization or person who has already achieved success in business or provided value to society at large. However, understanding that their businesses will not be financially successful without achieving significant social impact can be dicult for them to understand at first. Thus they must form partnerships with other organizations that share their vision, which can help them achieve their goals.

Social entrepreneurs can be found in all fields, not just within the realm of business. Many social entrepreneurs are members of the nonprofit sector, but others are in government, education, healthcare, or religious organizations. Social entrepreneurship also plays a role in international development. Non-profit organizations often have social entrepreneurship programs that focus on environmental sustainability. Some examples are planting trees to fight global warming or using wind turbines to generate power for whole communities. The same goes for individual businesses across the globe who take active roles in reducing their impact on the environment.
