Are we all psychopaths?

For every psychopaths sleeping in our head

I just finished the two seasons of the Netflix YOU series . It is not (really) my kind to watch a series until dawn but this series can have the merit of capturing attention.

Joe is a jealous man who reads messages on the phone of his partners. He follows them in the street, listens behind the doors and when he sees a threat, he takes care of eliminating them. He puts people in a glass box to force them to accept his reality. This perfect world in which everything is square and beautiful according to ITS rules.

Joe is a self-absorbed psychopath and sociopath. However, he is only a victim. The real causes of his behavior are an absent mother who left him alone at the mall to hang out with other men; a tutor, a former member of the Russian special forces who locked him in a glass cage to force him to change his behavior while reading. Joe had no choice when he was young. It had to be square to survive. Joe did not experience diversity when he was young: it was either white or black. So when Joe grew up, he couldn’t stand things not being white or black. It annoyed him and he wanted, at all costs, everything to be perfect as IT MUST.

Joe is a man who has lost a lot in his past. He no longer wishes to lose. That is why he protects what ‘’ belongs ‘’ to him, no matter the price and the people who could die from it.

Hey YOU !

Joe reminds me of each of us. We all protect someone or something. We do not want to be heartbroken and for this, we decide not to become attached to others. We are jealous, too protective. We feel invested in the mission of protecting what we love. Unfortunately we end up creating monsters who do not know how to love, who are not tolerant, racist, xenophobic, homophobic, etc.

We are beings who fight to protect what we love: A thief may act to never again experience poverty, an alcoholic drinks, to protect himself from too painful memories and an overly demanding parent beats his children because he does not want them a life spoiled by laziness, vice and idleness.

Are we all undiagnosed psychopaths? If in doubt, go see a shrink.
