Happy Minds Do Innovative Things!

I have been a professional automobile engineer, for a little more than eight years now. There have been many instances where I have created something new, which, now when I think of them, they have a stamp of my personality!

In other words, I have innovated!

I had heard of this word-innovation when I was a kid, but I got the grasp or the feel of this idea only when I started my career. When I joined the corporate world ‘innovation’ was the buzzword, all around.

I remember a few months had passed when my company organized an innovation contest, where we had to give some innovative ideas and if selected, we would have been given the resources to work on that.

There were a select few who participated but it appeared that this contest was not popular among everyone!

I heard of another such endeavour at a different company, where also the initiative failed.

I was intrigued, I spent a lot of time thinking about it. After trying my best to understand it over time and doing my own share of innovative things I feel I have figured out the reason for its failure….

In my opinion, It appears that ‘innovation’ is like ‘Eldorado’ for the business world! (Eldorado is a fictitious city of gold!) Everyone is looking for it, once in a while, somebody or some organizations find traces (good ideas which can be valued in gold!) but not to the extent that they really desire!

Sometimes, to find the answer to some questions, we have to understand, what is the bigger issue being raised by the question?

I mean, sometimes a more important issue is the root cause for other issues that we are facing!

So, we must be able to scrutinize the context in which it has been raised.

When we think in a little detail about this question, that why do innovation contests fail, we can easily observe a few things:
