Simply poetic

It starts with an idea —
forceful sometimes, nebulous most times.
A tiny hint —
two words, three words
strung in harmony.
Touching some emotion — joy, love or ecstasy —
pain, sometimes.

I watch them float across my waiting mind
gathering strength,
coming together, then stopping —
the cue to grab a pen,
capturing them on pages
then colouring them in.

They start out stark, bare, boring
then adverbs and adjectives walk in
— adding action and life to verbs and pronouns, I write
never quite knowing when a piece might end,
until you hear the whoosh — loud exhale
and there you have it —
the poet’s tale.

Writing poetry can be such an adventure. You never know where it might take you or what might be the result. Your best bet is to hope that at the end of it all, even if you do not understand what you wrote, someone else did.
