The historic importance of Coal

Coal was the fuel source that powered the industrial revolutions of both the UK and the US. These industrial revolutions shaped both countries to what they are today, to a significant extent the UK. The economic benefits and the environmental drawbacks that this industry had on these countries are still present, though to a much lower degree, in these two countries. The three web articles from Pedrick and Wainwright talk about these subjects. Coal though has lost its position as king of fossil fuels due to the impacts that its combustion might have in the environment. Due to the theory of climate change due to global warming, coal usage has decreased by many groups because of its harming environmental potential. Coal though continues to be a very cost efficient fuel source, and because many new technological advances like CFBs have made the production of energy through the combustion of coal much cleaner, it has increased in popularity. And it has not only become increasingly popular, but it also has reaffirmed its place in the world as a vital fossil fuel source for the present and future of energy production.

Because of its cost efficiency and the growing energy demand of developing nations, coal is gaining importance once again in the world. The World Coal Institute estimates that coal reserves will last for more than 100 years. They also project growth of 60% on coal demand due to the growing coal powered Chinese and Indian economies. The article by Vidal talks about these increasing demand for coal as a cheap energy source in these two countries. He also points out that major European energy companies will be investing in coal plants in these regions. The increase in coal electricity production in third world countries could be beneficial, as long as it is controlled. Coal combustion can release harmful gases to the atmosphere, but if organs like the Department of energy control the plants does in the US, it can allow many people and industries to have cheap and reliable access to electricity.
