How Many Nuclear Power Plants Does America Have?

The country’s largest nuclear power plant is in Palo Verde in Arizona. Powered by three reactors, it boasts of generating capacity of 3,937 megawatts. The smallest plant is R. E. Ginna in New York with one reactor and a capacity of 582 megawatts. The most recently installed reactor is the Watts Bar Unit 2 with a generating capacity of 1,122 megawatts. It was operationalized in October 2016.

In 2019, these nuclear plants generated a combined 809 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity or 19.7 percent of total utility-scale electricity generation. The US is currently working to increase its nuclear power capacity with construction ongoing on two reactors: Vogtle Units 3 and 4 in Georgia.
