Issues Men Face in Our Society

Talking about issues prevailing in our society, we automatically slide in the pool of problems women are dipped into. And, that is not because of the fact that the cases of women issues and felonies are much severe and worse, but because of the fact that crimes and discrimination against men are not talked about. Be it media of any kind or conversations between individuals, this is a topic hardly touched by any. Men themselves are afraid to bring up the issues they face in their daily lives.

Cases for domestic violence on men aren’t reported much. Reports and studies show that women in homosexual relationships are much more affected by violence than men in homosexual relationships. This directly indicates how women are more domestically violent. The difference is only about the severity. Domestic violence against men isn’t taken seriously.

Talking about India, the laws made to protect women from social evils like dowry and domestic abuse regarding dowry are often misused. A huge number of cases are filed against men under dowry laws, which is observed by many in India as being prone to misuse because of mechanical arrests by the police. In many cases, large amounts of dowry are claimed without any valid reasoning.

Earlier women had no rights as such, but with years of effort, we have come to a point where women have a voice. But a disturbing fact that is not doing any favours to such reform is the sexism that is still subtly present in every creek of the society. A certain bias has slipped into the modern family courts because of this situation. Men do not get sole custody of their children most of the times because of the sexist mindset of the presiding judges that women are meant, and are better at taking care of their children despite the conformity of a well organised and arranged male counterparts.

Men are expected to be capable enough to sustain a family alone. An earning wife and a domestic husband is an idea far fetched. We still celebrate the suffix, man-up after everything that defines toxic masculinity. Stereotypes are so well incorporated in the society that we do not realise the harm it does overall. Men suffer worse and much more, emotionally, as compared to women. Women have learned to find pride in their identity and see no shame seeking help for mental issues, which is a great thing. But, we men are geniuses pretending there’s nothing wrong. This leads to a very dark path called depression.

We have been raised to the ideology that men are supposed to act in a specific manner among their peers, among the people they interact with. We have been taught the wrong annotations of masculinity so much so that we don’t even realise the absurdity of it. We still believe that there are roles specific to each gender, be it consciously or subconsciously.

The credit for all the nonsense which men face can be crowned upon patriarchy. Patriarchy is the conceptualization of how men and masculinity should work. Although patriarchy is a set up to benefit men, the truth is, it actually harms men in many ways, as men are under the constant scrutiny of the fabricated norms that patriarchy has put in place. If all the feminists of the world, be it of any shade and area they vouch for, sit back to relax altogether, there is a minimal chance that a difference would be seen for the real and significant problems men face.

And, until we do not rip traditional masculinity from our thought centers, we will barely be able to solve the problems men face in the real world.
