Did you know? Whitefish is also called demersal fish. They live close to the sea-bed and may be round or flat. Round fish live near the seabed, e.g. cod, coley. And, Oil-rich fish are also called pelagic fish and they live close to the surface of the sea and are found in shoals, e.g. herring, mackerel.

So, its clear buying right fish is not an easy task. Here we have a list of 10 tips that will make you a pro in buying fish online.

1. Looks for these things in following fish types:
Smoked Fish
- Should look Glossy
- The flesh should feel firm and non-sticky
- It should have a pleasant & smoky smell
Fillets
- Fillets are usually neat & trim with firm flesh
- Fillets should be closely packed together, not ragged or gaping
- And, Whitefish should have a white translucent color with no discoloration done
Shellfish
- Shells should not be cracked or broken, and the shells of mussels and oysters should be tightly shut.
- Open shells should close when tapped sharply
- Lobsters, crabs, and prawns should have a good color and should be heavy for their size
Whole Fish
- Whole Fish must be clear, bright eyes and not sunken
- They should have bright red gills and scales should not be missing and they should be firmly attached to the skin
- They should have shiny skin with bright natural coloring
- The tail should be stiff and the flesh feels firm
- It should have a sea-fresh smell
Frozen Fish
- Frozen Fish be hard with no signs of thawing
- The packaging should not be damaged
- And most importantly, no evidence of freezer burn (i.e. dull, white, dry patches)
