7 Tips To Keep Yourself Sane This Lockdown

If you are anything like me, this self-isolation period of lockdown is getting out of your hands. You are losing sight of sanity, slowly but surely. You are privileged to stay home and survive this disaster, but you are losing grip over your conscience. You are becoming increasingly angry, agitated, and short-tempered. You know you need to calm down, tone down the crazy one notch. If you are struggling to achieve this, try out some of the tips listed below. You might be able to save yourself.

When was the last time you read a novel? Or any good book?

Whatever your answer — there is no better time to read than now.

Whether you are a voracious, seasoned reader, or a person who has long lost touch with literature (or never had one to begin with) — this lockdown is a blessing for you.

If you find yourself in the newbie reader category, pick up any book that you might find interesting. It’s okay to judge a book by its cover in this phase. Make sure you try to pick up a short, recently published, genre fiction novel.

If you are a regular reader, aim for books different from your preferred genre. Read books of different authors, set in different times, or different countries. Try to get to know the world through these books. If you’ve never read a literary novel, or have been passing on reading a long book stuck in the back of your bookshelf, now is the best time to pick it up. Experiment with your reading styles and schedules.

Voracious readers don’t need my help on this one.

If there’s one thing that will determine whether or not your lockdown period has been productive, it’s whether or not you’ve learnt something new.

The first few days could be challenging, but once you get used to this as a part of your schedule, the journey would be a lot smoother.

It can be anything — a new indoor game, a new skill set related to your occupation, perhaps even a new language. Personally, I am learning to play chess in this period. Learning such new skills will help your mind focus. The mind is calmer when it is focused. Rather than sitting idle the entire time, this exercise will prove very fruitful. Your brain will be looking forward to this part of your routine everyday.

One other beautiful challenge that comes to mind, is to learn a musical instrument. Have a guitar catching dust in the corner of your store room? Or a small keyboard you bought years ago. Or perhaps a flute lying at the back of a shelf. Pick it up, and start playing. Learn online if you please, but don’t let your guitar gently weep in the corner.

The ocean of knowledge and resources that it is, the internet has more than enough to help you. Hence, all you need to learn something new is will and determination. Utilize your day’s time towards this, and you’ll be satisfied every day with having learnt something valuable. Supply your brain with its daily dose of braingasms, and it stays well-rooted to its function.

Movies, short films, TV or web-series. Just watch ’em all!

But this time, watch movies of varied genres — genres you’ve never explored before — for there are a lot of good movies in every genre that’ll make the time you spend worth it.

Mix up your genres with every next movie. Don’t be afraid to experiment with your choices. Preferring a single genre of movie can make you cold to other emotions exhibited through other movies.

If you’ve always been a romance fan, try mystery.

If you’ve loved action movies, try the historical genre.

If you’ve preferred fantasy over the years, give political movies a chance.

Watch a movie based only on the poster, cast and genre. Stay miles away from any movie trailer, teaser, or the IMDB ratings. This way you surprise yourself. (I might put up another post regarding this later.)

If you’re confused about choosing movies try this insane but fun trick. Pick up a movie, then after watching it, pick up an actor and watch another one of his/her movies. Maintain the chain.

Here’s an example from Hollywood movies. Let’s start from the Shawshank Redemption (for where else do you start from). Pick Morgan Freeman, and search for any of his other movies. Watch it and pick any cast member from that movie. Continue this until you reach a dead end, then start over again.

Note: This is only an example. Don’t follow this exact sequence, or choose these very movies. Surprise yourself.

This way you get to watch plenty of movies, with different genres. This randomness enables your movie streak to not remain monotonous, and you get to explore the world of cinema even deeper.

This is, perhaps, the most important step of all. To stay sane and grounded, you must follow a schedule. Make sure you divide your time for all things, important AND recreational.

It might be problematic if you consistently fall out of a schedule or a routine. You’ll spend a large chunk of time performing one task, thus eating off time from others. For instance, if you spend a lot of time only watching movies or series, your office tasks might suffer. You must be aware of this while allocating time to each activity.

Hence, designing a fit schedule is important so you always know when to start and when to stop. You’re aware of what is coming or what you will be doing in the next hour. What is sanity but this?

Manage screen times carefully — you don’t want to be staring at screens or pages too long, straining your eyes. Split your screen time in multiple slots, separated by other tasks.

Whatever your sleep cycle is, try to stay energetic throughout the day. Schedule your meals at proper intervals. Don’t sleep too much or too little. Don’t beat yourself up if you do. Even if you happen to wake up at odd times, don’t fret. You were only waiting for this moment to arise.

Twist and Shout, if your heart pleases so.

Or at least meditate.

Don’t ask me why.

Just do it.

Wait, what?

That’s right. Travel the world.

You could watch videos of people traveling to these various parts of the world, but those are mere sights seen through other people’s eyes.

With applications like Google Earth, you get to explore the place by your own pace, your own choice. If it is a popular city, you can even walk through the streets wherever your wishes take you. Go on to explore random, long and winding roads that might lead to some Strawberry Fields.

Whichever way you follow — vlogs, TV shows, or Google Earth, remember to enjoy the place, to know and understand the location, it’s culture. Enjoy the breathtaking view of this world through the confinements of your small room.

Good music makes you feel uplifted, energized, refreshed, invigorated … (for the rest of the sentence, refer to thesaurus.com). Bottom line, music makes you feel.

The minimum requirement to pass the isolation period in sanity, is to be as human as humanely possible. Feelings and emotions play an important role in this (Hence, my focus on arts in this article). The way good music can soothe your soul, no words can be adequate to explain.

Your taste does not matter. What matters is what feelings it invokes in you!

And if you want some fun… you know what to sing.

Whatever you do in this period, try not to be too hard on yourself. Don’t carry the world upon your shoulders. Have fun — don’t confine yourself in the mechanical boundaries of productivity. This period is one of its kind. More than anything, it is important to be happy with yourself, no matter what you do. Your mind might trick you into thinking that you wasted your time, but refrain from falling for it. Enjoy this period, or you might have heartbreaking regrets once you look back months later.
