My thoughts on online learning

To be completely honest, I was a bit skeptical when signing in this course and had a few doubts. There are a few reasons for that. Firstly, as I am not a student of the Faculty of Education but a student of digital technologies, I didn’t really know anyone and I was a bit scared that I would need more background from the area of education. And although I was already part of some e-learning classes, this particular one was different, because there is no face-to-face contact with the teacher or my fellow classmates, not even once a month (which was the case of my previous e-learning classes).

But as the lectures passed by, I was more comfortable and with each assignment, I grew more confident. This e-learning class has many advantages, you have more freedom — to choose when you’ll work on your homework, and the topics are not very restricted, you can write about each topic from different perspectives. What I have found very helpful was the Fleep discussion group. I think that is one of my favorite features of this class. The fact, that you can discuss the topic with everyone at any time, regardless of some schedule or a classroom, is very helpful. This is something I would not be able to do in other classes, where I don’t know anyone and there is no platform for sharing ideas or helping each other.

In general, I think online learning has its advantages and disadvantages like any other class. I think it’s great that it gives you more freedom — it’s especially great for someone who has a full-time job and does not have time to attend lectures. In this way, she/he can do all the work from home and learn from anywhere, anytime.

On the other hand, I have attended online classes before which I did not particularly like. I was mainly because the assignments were too complicate and difficult to understand without face-to-face communication, and we also did not have this platform for online cooperation between students like Fleep. We could only communicate online with the teacher, who would often not respond to our messages. Fortunately, this is not the case of Social Technology for Learning. I find the course very interesting so far and I love the friendly environment which was built. I wish more classes (online and offline) were held in the same spirit.
