How to Stop Thinking That Everyone Hates You

One of the things that I used to struggle with is how people see me. This used to make me think that people saw me in a negative way without having any evidence to back up the story. Now that I am able to stop caring about how people see me, I no longer worry as much and I feel free.

Worrying about how other people see you can be terrible, especially when it starts to affect your work and social life. I find it very hard to go out with people on a social aspect because I feel like they do not want to be with me. What proof do I have for this statement to make it fact? That is where the issue begins, there is no proof, but I feel this anyway.

Often, the only things that we hear about are the faults that we make. This was the case for me at work, as people would never tell me when I did something right and when I made a mistake or said something incorrect, they would ‘pounce’ on me. It made me feel very useless and like people only thought negatives about me. It turns out that, just because I think something, doesn't make it true and in this case I was incorrect in thinking that everyone thought negatively of me. How did I find out?

I started to do things where I would get recognition if people liked it, namely photography and posting the photos to Instagram and Facebook. I already had an interest in photography and I enjoy it, I also thought I was decent enough. I started posting my best photos to Instagram and the likes came pouring in. People started talking about my pictures at work and random people started following me on Instagram. These are all examples of empirical evidence that I am, good at something. Why would I be getting so many likes, like from professional photographers too if it really wasn't all that good?

So, you see, this is how I overcame thinking that all I do is bad. Maybe I am not the greatest tech support in the world, maybe that is true but I know deep down that I am not awful. In these times, companies do not want people who are bad at their jobs and I would have been informed.

So, rationalize the thoughts that are in your mind and try to break them down a little bit at a time. Do people actually think negatively of you? Find the evidence to support that they do and if you can’t, maybe it’s time to start thinking that they don't hate you after all.
